Smaller and Faster

Sunday, April 6th, 2008

I did some more tinkering underneath the covers to the website this weekend. It should have resulted in a slight increase in speed for you and a small bandwidth savings for me. That’s one of the fun parts about hosting your own blog. You can try things out and not worry about needing technical assistance from a M-F 8-5 support organization on a weekend. I hate waiting for “technical support” to return my emails. Right now, I’m waiting to hear from several people for simple administrative tasks regarding products I’ve purchased. It will take them minutes once they get to my request; but who knows when that will be. So, I really enjoy being able to do everything myself. It can be a nuisance to do upgrades; but otherwise it’s quite nice doing things on my own schedule.

Please let me know if the blog seems faster (or at least not slower). My informal speed tests say that pages load 10 -15% faster and are up to 25% smaller. Not a big deal; but every bit helps. Now if only I could find a way to post a full size, full length movie.

Live Shoutbox Is Back Alive

Wednesday, April 2nd, 2008

I updated the shoutbox so that comments that are moderated are shown to the original author. That should make it more user friendly and, hopefully, won’t confuse people as much as its previous behavior. It’s a shame that it has to be moderated; but I can’t think of a better mechanism to keep it from being overrun by spambots. Send us a shout if you want to check it out.

Nothing Should Have Changed

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

I upgraded to the most recent version of WordPress on Saturday night. Nothing should have changed from a visitor’s perspective; but you never know with software upgrades. We’ve been using WordPress for three years and it gets better with every release. It’s a nuisance to host your own blog; especially when the system administrator would rather be investigating California Girl’s naughty bits. :) But at least we don’t have to deal with the idiosyncrasies of Blogger. And, except for having to worry about bandwidth, we can post as many pictures and movies as we want. To be fair, Blogger has been much more stable than it used to be. But recently we started receiving a “Content Warning” when visiting some of our favorite blogs. It’s nice to not have to worry about things like that. Anyway, if you notice anything that is not working or if something has mysteriously disappeared from the sidebar please let me know.

A “Quick” Upgrade

Tuesday, March 25th, 2008

Married in Ohio was intermittently inaccessible late Monday evening while I was performing a software upgrade. It should have been offline less than 5 minutes; but it ended up being almost 10 times that long. I learn something every upgrade even though I don’t want too. It certainly would be a lot easier if I had a scratch monkey. Our blog certainly isn’t as valuable as Mabel; but it is still very frustrating when things don’t go as planned. Anyway, my point wasn’t to complain about software upgrades; we’re all very familiar with how much of a headache those can be. Excerpt; for a slight increase in speed; you should not notice anything different. If you do see something weird, please let me know via a comment, the shoutbox, or an email.

Computers, Sex, Sports and Blogging

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008

We didn’t float way in the rain. The start of the week has just been very busy. We attended a function on Sunday night and didn’t get home until late, so, the week started off rushed and harried. We seldom blog about why we’re not posting; but we received a lot of comments and emails on our last post, and we wanted to let everyone who we hasn’t received an answer know that we’ll respond in the near future

California Girl and I had a triple header on Sunday morning. It was “nice”. That probably isn’t the best word to describe a morning when you don’t get out of bed until 2:00 P.M.; but, considering all of the photographs and videos we post, you probably have already figured out that we like sex. California Girl was on the tail end of her period, so we didn’t need to bother with the diaphragm which made it especially laid-back.

Over the weekend, I increased the font size of the text in posts and on the sidebar. It should make things easier to read; especially at higher screen resolutions. Let me know if you think that it is too big. California Girl and I both like the new theme. It’s old and new and the same time.

The Tournament begins on Thursday. Since Ohio State didn’t make the field of 6465 I doubt that we’ll be making very many bets. If you’re a big hoops fan let us know what your favorite team is. We’re not as excited as when the Bucks are playing, but we still may be interested in an internet wager with some of our fellow bloggers.

Something Old, Something New

Monday, March 3rd, 2008

You may have noticed that the orange is gone from the sidebar. After two years, I finally changed the theme. The colors are the same since we like combinations. And, of course, we kept the same header image. But otherwise, it’s a new and hopefully easier to read design. It’s slightly wider than before so it looks best on resolutions of 1024x 768 or higher, something that shouldn’t with today’s widescreen monitors. And, and, and, it’s widget enabled so now I don’t have to edit the sidebar by hand whenever we want to change something. I am still tweaking a few things, especially the font size so let me know via comment, email or shout of you have any problems.

I also changed the CAPCHA so it should be more readable. Does anyone have a good list of words to use? Unlike the one before which used randomly characters, this one uses “regular” English words from a user supplied list. I loaded a shot list just to stop the spam; but I think it would be fun to use words form a particular topic or genre. I like the way this one looks much better than the previous one. Hopefully, it will do just as good of a job of preventing spam. While I was configuring this one, I tried a JavaScript/cookie-based antis-spam plugin that wasn’t much help at all. The bots really are getting smarter.

P.S. I know that the changes are subtle but any/all comments and criticisms are very much appreciated.

Update: I fixed a problem with the antispam plugin. You should be able to comment now.
