California Girl and I both picked up or new eyeglasses today. They were very expensive which we expected; but they look very stylish which is good since we need to wear them all of the time. We are both still getting used to the new prescriptions; but my vision is much improved and her California Girl’s vision is better too although she did not have as much of a change as I did. Glasses lenses are a lot more high tech than they used to be. And, if your vision is like outs, it really does make a difference. They don’t reverse the ravages of time; but they make it a little bit more manageable. It was definitely was easier for me to type this post. It’s been easier for me to use my Droid phone too. We are pleased. We’re not sure how to do it but we’d like to display them in one of our upcoming photo shoots.

Mismatched

For the first time since we got them for our 20^th anniversary two years ago, California Girl is without her half of our matching wristwatches. The battery in California Girl’s watch died last week and, since it’s supposed to be water resistant to 100m, the jeweler had to send it back to the factory service center so that the gaskets could be inspected/replaced and it could be re-pressurized. It hasn’t quite been two years so everything is covered by the warranty; but she’ll still be without it for a couple of weeks. With all of the devices that have clocks around, she doesn’t “need” it and its really just jewelry; but not wearing a watch is still a strange feeling for her. Partly because she’s always worn one and partly because we’ve had matching wristwatches (among other things) since before we got married. One of these days, we’ll get a really nice set of matching timepieces and the set we currently have will just be for “backup”; but, for now, one of the things that makes California Girl and I “us” is missing.

2009 A Year In Review

January
Did a lot of tinkering with the number of posts on the front page to speed up page load times. Finally I wrote a plugin that shows all posts published in the last seven days on the home page.
Created and published our favorite HNT photo post of the year.

February
Got California Girl a nice skirt and blouse set for her birthday.

Neglected to mention that Married In Ohio celebrated its fourth anniversary.
Survived one of those good news, bad news situations where the “good news” was that the bad news wasn’t as bad as it could have been.

March
Went over 2,000,000 Visitors which is a lot for us.
Created and published one of our favorite Two For Tuesday photo posts of the year.

April
Created and published our favorite HNT video post of the year.
Updated our theme to support threaded comments.
Posted a true click through HNT.

May
Posted our version of Jack Dawson and Rose DeWitt Bukater on the Titanic.

Celebrated our 21st wedding anniversary by going to dinner at our favorite restaurant.

June
Reminisced about the days that we used to watch us having sex in the mirror.

Had some good pool weather for one of the few times this past summer.

July
Posted a video edition of our Independence Day Sex series.

Visited a college with The Girl. Realized how close we are to becoming “empty nesters”.

Had a LOT of problems after upgrading our server to PHP 5.3. The upgrade also broke our OpenId sever too.
Started working on the project from hell at work. It’s still radioactive.

November
Added a visitor map to the blog that showed where their visitors were from. Check it out in the sidebar just below the local weather.
Took some fun photos of California Girl changing one of the spotlights in the kitchen

Posted one of my one of my favorite photographs of California Girl for the week of Thanksgiving’s HNT.

Published an illustrated post explaining our “bedcam”setup”.

Got a new HDTV to replace our old one which started smoking and had a burning electrical smell.

A Preview

For the second time in three weeks, The Girl has gone on a school trip and we’ve been by ourselves in the evening for a few days during the week. We’ve been home alone many times on weekends; but it’s different not having the kids around on a work/school night. Most of the occasions when we were kidless on weekends were because we had something planned and were going to be out very late or were hosting an (adults only) party. Never just an ordinary day like it has been on the most recent occasions. We’ve been having fun (see our last Two For Tuesday post); but, after almost 20 years, the empty house does seem strange. It will be weird when days like this are “normal”. We will adapt; but we are both looking forms to Thanksgiving when it will be just like old times even if it’s only for a few days.

What Works For Us

Earlier this week, Guest_1060 asked in the shoutbox if we could “do a his and hers post on how you keep your sex life active and happy”. Every relationship is different; but here is what works for us:

The master bedroom is and has always been off limits to the kids (except once a week when one of them is collecting the trash). You have to preserve your own private space; otherwise you end up living too much for the kids.

Don’t establish rules about when you won’t have sex. Instead, establish rules about when you will have sex. For example, many people avoid having sex when the kids are home. Since kids are home most of the time, especially when they are younger, that limits your opportunities. California Girl and I have a long standing tradition of having sex on Saturday morning. When the kids were younger we would take them to their Saturday activities, and then take a break when we got home. Or if The Girl had a soccer tournament, we would come home for a “nap” between the morning and afternoon game.

We don’t take sex too seriously. It is a renewable resource after all. It’s nice to be romantic; but there is no rule that says you can’t have a quickie in the morning if that’s what you feel like. It’s not as if it takes a week to recharge.

Make an effort to avoid getting into a rut and don’t be afraid to try new things. If you don’t like it then don’t it again. Leave the bra and panties in the drawer, especially if you’re going to be around the house. They don’t have to be an obstacle; but I know I love it when I come home and California Girl is hanging out in a nice summer outfit.

Don’t be concerned with what other people think. The only thing that matters is what you and your SO think. It’s hard and ultimately unsatisfying to try to conform to other people’s standards. It’s your life. At the end of the day, the people who pass judgment and force us into a dull and boring path will never be happy. They can only find satisfaction if they are criticizing someone.

Remember, serendipity almost never happens when you are married with children. That’s one of the reasons why California Girl and I have come to enjoy our Tuesday photo sessions so much. This past week, for example, I had a bad day at work. It would have been very easy to spend the evening complaining and not really paying any attention to California Girl; but holding our regularly scheduled photo session completely changed my mood. Wednesday is a work/school day so we usually call out for a pizza so it doesn’t get too late.

We do things with each other. For example, we always shower together on weekends. And we run errands together or work out together on Sunday morning. I really enjoy our joint workout sessions and still get a good workout even though the pace we go is slightly slower that what I would run by myself.

Remember that going out on Friday and Saturday night isn’t only for the kids. Sometimes, they have to stay in so that California Girl and I can enjoy an evening out. We probably don’t “act our age”; but, sometimes, that is a good thing. And, except for special occasions, we avoid the work crowd and keep to ourselves. That way, we can focus on us and not worry about office politics, etc.

What Time Is It?

We don’t like the time change; but we really like the wristwatches we got last year for our wedding anniversary. They are much easier to adjust than the perpetual calendar models we replaced. It’s good that we got them last year since money tight because the bad economy and we probably won’t be making any major purchases this coming summer. I know it sounds corny; but, I think about California Girl every time I look at my wristwatch to check the time.

Birthday Girl

California Girl recently had a birthday. We usually don’t say on what the specific day our birthdays occur; but careful observers will have noticed what day everyone’s birthday is from our updates to the “About Us” area of the sidebar. She was out when I got home from work, so I laid out all of the new clothes I got for her on the bed. I’ve always been frustrated that I have such a hard time finding winter clothes for her for her birthday. As cold as it is outside, I’d like to get her something warm that she can wear right away. Unfortunately, since California Girl’s birthday is in the middle of winter, the stores are already closing out winter clothes and I end up buying her things that she can’t wear until the spring. Anyway, I wanted to wish her a very happy birthday. I hope she likes her birthday presents.

2008 A Year In Review

January
The Girl got her learner’s permit and The Boy earned a scholarship to college. It really started to sink in how different things are going to be in a few years months.

February
Celebrated the three year anniversary of Married In Ohio.
The Boy wrestled in his final wrestling meet and perhaps the last competitive event of his career.
St Valentine’s Day was on a Thursday which made for a very festive Valentine’s Day HNT.

March
Finally changed our theme after almost two years.
March was unofficial Two For Tuesday video month as we ended up postingthree portionsof a longer video in TFT -126, TFT – 126 and TFT – 127.

Had road head to commemorate spring finally arriving.

Took a hiatus to deal with some issues in real life. It’s good to know that we were missed.

May
Ran in the Cincinnati Flying Pig Half-Marathon for the 6^th consecutive year.
Celebrated our 20^th wedding anniversary.

Posted this photo to put a figurative thumb in the eye of peoplewho disapprove of interracial relationships.

June
The Boy graduated from high school.
Got in the swimming pool to celebrate the arrival of summer.

July
Helped The Boy set up his first web site. It’s about computerish stuff as he calls it.
The Girl had a huge party for her sweet sixteen.
The matching wristwatches that we got for our anniversary and their first appearance.
Had sex outside next to a large rock.

August
Inadvertently became the owner of two laptops.
The Boy went off to college.
Had the house to ourselves for awhile.

September
Had sex by candlelight because of the power outage caused by the windstorm from Hurricane Ike.

Got a new digital camera. Because it’s us, one of the first photographs is of California Girl giving me a blow job.

October
California Girl and I had fabulous hotel sex while visiting our alma mater for homecoming. We previewed it in HNT – 162 and HNT – 163 before doing a full photo post.

Tried to decide which digital camera to use for NSFW photos.

November
The longest presidential election in U.S. history is finally over.

The ravages of time finally caught up with me and I started wearing bifocals.
The Boy came home from college for Thanksgiving and, for awhile, it was just like old times.
I changed the theme for the second time in less than a year.

December
The Boy got all As but one in his first semester of college.
California Girl was anice and naughty Santa for Christmas.

12 Days of Sex

I’m not sure what this evening may bring; but Tuesday was the twelfth consecutive day that California Girl and I had sex. We have sex very frequently; but 12 days in a row is unusual for us. Being on vacation the entire week of Thanksgiving helped; only three out of the twelve days were work days. Like everyone, we work to live; but is sure makes dong the things we enjoy more difficult. If we were independently wealthy and didn’t have to work for our money, I wonder if we would ever take a day off from sex. It’s fun to speculate each holiday season what life would be like if we could afford the $86,609 the “12 Days of Christmas” items would cost; but, our “12 Days of Sex” reminds us how good life can be.

Homecoming

The Girl had a rare weekend off from soccer so California Girl and I went to the homecoming of our alma matter this past weekend. We’ve been in town occasionally and driven through the area; but, except for an occasional event in a nearby building, it’s been over twenty years since we were on campus. We had a great time! And, the football team won the game handily.

We stayed in a “four star” hotel just off campus that was almost brand new. We don’t usually travel without at least one of the kids; so we decided to treat ourselves. Our room had a large window with great view of the city. It’s something that we would definitely do more often if we could afford it. Our only regret is that the weekend wasn’t long enough. We’d like to get back again sometime; but, for now, it’s back to work for both of us.

P.S. We took some great pictures on Sunday morning. We haven’t had time to edit them yet; but will be sure to post them when we have.
