I Hate Sneak Thieves
For the third time in four years, my sports watch was stolen from the locker room at work. It’s “my fault” for not making sure it was locked up; but one wouldn’t think that that they would have to go to such lengths to protect such an inexpensive item from their co-workers. I can “understand” someone wanting to take a nice dress watch or a GPS enabled running watch; but who steals something that can be purchased at Target or Wal-Mart for $30 from someone that they work with every day? It’s not the money or the nuisance of having to go to the store that bothers me. It’s the idea that a person or persons that I’ve known and worked with for years is finds it so easy to rob me if given the opportunity.

That is sad and leaves such a bitter taste.
Alfie: We haven’t had a lot of turnover where I work (which is to say people leave or get laid off but very few new hires) so it’s probably someone who I’ve been working with for a while which makes it even more disgusting,
Alfie is sooo right. That bitter taste, the personal violation, lingers after someone takes from us. Sorry it happened again.
Rosie: I’m a fairly social person at work; so it’s probably someone who I talk to. I don’t know how they manage to hold a conversation without being uncomfortable. It makes me a bit uncomfortable knowing that I work with such a brazen thief.
I hate to say it but are you really surprised. I taught for years and nothing surprises me. I have een people change the hours they work on spreadsheets, when they want a day off.
Jerry: I’m not surprised as much as disgusted. This isn’t stealing from a larger monolithic corporation; but from one who you work next to. We’ve raised two kids so we’ve seen how some of their classmates will steal almost anything. But it’s still petty. Especially when you consider how inexpensive the watch is compared to the average salary of an employee where I work.
That is so crappy. I got pissed when someone ate my cake out of the breakroom icebox. Something like a watch would probably make my head pop.
Chickie: We went through a period at work where nothing in the refrigerator was safe. Someone was even taking stuff that they could buy out of a vending machine a few feet away. We’ve got cameras in all of the hallways and most common areas; but it doesn’t help since in high-traffic areas.
So sorry to read this has happened to you. It’s awful. It’s no excuse but some people are desperate. Extra desperate, it seems. I’m glad you didn’t go ape shit like Charlie Sheen when his watch went missing.
Have a good week.

TemptingSweets99: No, I just went to the store and bought another one. I know that people are hurting; but who really needs a watch these days anyway? The current time is everywhere. I like to time my runs when I’m working out; but the rest of the time, I wear my Tissot which is really just man jewelry.
That’s just horrible- I would hate to work somewhere where my belongings were not safe. What’s the world coming to?
Viemoira: I think that the bad economy is making more people “forget” their principles. As TemptingSweets99 said, these are desperate times. People are stress out and angry at work. I know that we’ve had a steady diet of “be lucky that you have a job” from management while they pile on the work of our laid off co-workers. It’s getting harder and harder to be anything but bitter at work some days.
