Handyman
Long ago, one of my online handles used to be Handyman. Not because I was a prolific DIYer; but from the prehistoric human Homo habilis. These days; however, I’ve become more of a traditional handyman. I seem to be spending a lot of time fixing things that are broken. In addition to keeping three cars running, a lot of things in the house need fixing. My most recent project was replacing the garbage disposer. A little bit of plumbing, a little bit of electrical work, and, despite all the goo in the pipes downstream of the disposer, not too bad of a smell. Thankfully, I’ve got much better tools than prehistoric man. And I can start a fire if I need to.†
†The real Homo habilus did not have fire-making skills and had to wait until he found something already burning. If the fire went out, he did not know how to start it again.

Sounds very familiar. Just replaced my disposal a couple months ago. The hardest part was contorting myself under the sink. Then there’s the leak roof….the flat tire on the lawn mower….the this..the that. It never ends!
Red: I know what you mean. We’ve got a reverse osmosis unit under the sink with all of extra pipes and tubing that comes with it. Everything is disposable these days. Nothing is built to last.
Our lawn mower has a flat too; but I just pump it up whenever I need to cut the grass. It doesn’t lose air fast enough to go flat while I’m mowing. I’m only gone to cut the grass a few more times; so I’ll probably wait until the spring to replace it; especially since I have to order the part online. “Hardware” stores don’t have many replacement parts these days.
Fixing things comes with home/car ownership. I don’t mind doing things from time to time; but recently, it seems like the repairs are becoming more frequent.
I really don’t do too much DIY stuff. I suppose that if I didn’t have a man around the house I would be shit out of luck. Eeep!
Rage: I’m sure you would adapt. California Girl and I have complementary skills so things work out pretty well. I ‘m the mechanically inclined one and she does all of the things that would make me pull my hair out (if I had any).
i *love* DIY’ers and am proclaimed to be one myself! It is much better to learn to do as mch on your own as possible…
Viemoira: I’m the reluctant DIYer. I used to do everything myself. Then I got away from it so I could do more things with the family. But, these days, unlike on the go go days of times gone by, I have more time than money.
