Saturday Slop
The Girl didn’t have a soccer game today and is at the 18th birthday party for one of her girlfriends so we’ve got the house all to ourselves this evening. She has a summer birthday so she’s younger than almost all of her friends; but, it still doesn’t seem like any of them should be turning 18 yet. It’s amazing how fast they grow up. Nowadays, our biggest logistical problem is making arrangements for The Girl to get fuel for the car she drives. (Most of the gas stations nearby are credit card only. And if they do take cash it’s a colossal nuisance.) It doesn’t seem like that long ago when the biggest concern was to make sure she always wore a helmet when she was riding her bicycle.
California Girl still has some work to do then we’re going to go out to dinner. Working from home has many benefits; but, except when she is on vacation, the work is always there. She doesn’t have the luxury of an occasional snow day. And a sick day seems almost pointless when she’s already at home and can’t make anyone else ill unless she’s completely bedridden. It’s a fabulous gig; but it does sometimes creep into the weekends. Of course we’ll be home alone until sometime on Sunday afternoon so we shouldn’t have any problem making up for lost time.

It’s amazing how fast they grow up – but you’ll always be their mom and dad!
Alfie: I know. But I still really miss the days when we were the “Fab Four”.
Most of the gas stations around here sell re-loadable debit/gift/credit cards; if not, the malls sell reloadable credit cards that can be used anywhere…
Just a thought; that wasy you don’t have to worry about her being stuck somewhere almost out of gas…
DisappearingJohn: Around here, it seems like almost everything has fees. Not to use; but to reload and/or a monthly maintenance fee.
The cheapest alternative is probably for her me to open a joint checking account with her. It’s a nuisance; especially since she doesn’t have a job; but debit cards are free as is a basic checking account.
I can’t even….nay….I don’t even want to think of the day when the stepkids start driving or asking for money for gas for the cars.
Maybe by then cars will fly or won’t even cost anything to run…wishful thinking!
Rage: The Girl is a good driver. So we’re not overly worried when she’s out and about. However it seems weird when she’s not in the house. And, since we have an “extra” vehicle that she can drive whenever she wants and has our permission, she’s out of the house a lot more. In many way’s it’s a preview of what things will be like next year. It’s still hard for us to wrap our heads around our youngest going to college and on her own in less than a year.
i am totally starting to understand the whole working from home…
Viemoira: It definitely made having young kids easier. But California Girl does end up working MORE hours than she would if she had a “regular” 8 – 5 job. It takes a certain temperament to be able to do it and keep things balanced.
