She Passed
The Girl passed her driver examination so now there’s one more teenage driver on the road in Ohio. She got points taken off for both the maneuverability test (stopping to check progress) and the road test (turning to wide); but not enough to fail. I was a bit nervous; but we let her drive home by herself even though we were in a different county. She’s happy to have her license; but even she admitted that its different driving places by herself without a parent (or instructor) in the passenger’s seat.
We’re sure that she’s planning to drive anywhere and everywhere that she needs to go; but we’re going to insist that she take things very slowly; especially the in the beginning. She is a good driver; but, like most kids her age, she’s overly confident in her abilities. I was the same way and that’s what worries me. It certainly does make things easier for us. She does her own errands like going to the store to get her own school supplies or driving back and forth to soccer practice. Its’ nerve wracking; but we’re hoping to adapt quickly. We’ve got a while before the first snow and all the worries that will bring.

I bet there are quite a few mixed emotions! Congrats on her passing!
Viemoira: We’re petrified. It’s good that she can driver herself. That way we can hurry her without out having to rush ourselves; but it’s still nerve-wracking knowing she’s out her on the road by herself. Hopefully we won’t be so nervous after she’s been driving herself for awhile. Assuming she doesn’t run into anything.
Congrats on your daughter getting her license. I remember when I got mine (back in 1902 of course) and I scared the shit out of my mom when she taught me how to drive. I remember especially, when driving up hills after being at a stop sign.
eeep
Rage: She’s happy; but we’ve got mixed emotions. We’re glad that we’re (mostly) out of the taxi business; but we’re worried too since most of the places she drives (e.g. school, soccer practice, etc.) have a lot of novice drivers. And she’s much more worrisome to us that I was to my parents. Partly because teens today do so much more driving and partly because the trucks are bugger and the cars are smaller. Plus, the places she goes are spread out so she’ll be driving a lot mare than I did when I was her age.
He passed too
No car yet, but I should have purchased a new one by Labor Day weekend and then he can have mine. And…I’ll be glad. I have to pick him up from the movies tonight at 11:30. I’ll worry yes, but…I’m looking forward to him having a vehicle!
Kelly: Congratulations to your son. I’m sure he’s looking forward to his own vehicle. Getting your driver’s license is a big deal when you’re in high school; and a really big deal if you have a car. The Girl wasn’t overly triumphant around the house; but I know from a source that she was really proud of herself around school. The problem with her car turned out to be with the engine rather than the transmission as we had feared. I’m not going to fix it iuntil it gets worse but it’s a repair that I can make myself.
We do enjoy not having to take The Girl as many places; but, she needs to do a better job of checking in once she’s reached her destination. It doesn’t seem like a big deal to her if she doesn’t call/text right away; but, if is to us sitting at home wondering if she’s made it safely. I drove her to a few places on Saturday and she was much more conscientious today. We’ve been sending her on short (daylight) errands. It definitely makes our evenings/weekends more relaxing.
My dad didn’t let me drive out of our small town or after dark for four years after I got my license until I was financially independent and moving in with my fiancee. You guys seem to be taking her passing alot better.
Sarah: She has some rules like calling when she gets were she going but we aren’t being overly restrictive; but we aren’t. We’d rather her slowly get accustomed to driving than suddenly be on her own and never have driven anywhere. No long trips yet but we are slowly building toward that.
I didn’t drive much either when I was her have since I didn’t have a car. (My dad wouldn’t allow it.) And one of the ALWAYS drive whenever we went anywhere. So, I didn’t drive much until the ’71 Chevy Caprice in my college days.
