Not The Best Week
Bad things seem to happen in threes and this was our week for them.
We had the previously mentioned networking problems over the weekend. And, since we were out of the area, no one was around to do a quick albeit temporary fix. I have finally replaced some hardware so hopefully everything is fixed permanently. The previous configuration never went more than a week or so without a minor hiccup; so we should know in a few days if I replaced the faulty unit or if the problem is in another device.
Out cable box died on Monday. The third replacement box works. Unfortunately, it took many telephone calls and three trips to their customer (no)service center. I hate used equipment. The representative actually claimed “Someone else had it before so you know its working” ignoring the fact that if it was working they wouldn’t be exchanging it. I’m sure they gave the boxes I returned to the next unsuspecting customer so they could make multiple trips until they got one that worked too.
The chemistry of the pool got out of balance over the weekend and the water was so cloudy we couldn’t see the bottom. Four days and $100 worth of chemicals later everything seems to be clearing up. It’s going to be several days before it’s swimmable again. And I still haven’t figured out exactly what got in the water and how. I just hope it doesn’t happen again.
We are so ready for the weekend!

That is the suck!
Here’s to hoping that everything gets back up and running and stays that way.
Rage: Our network connection has been stable so far so we are cautiously optimistic. And the pool water is getting clearer by the day. Unfortunately it’s another cold rainy day. But, besides the rain, it’s been a good start to the weekend.
(1) Your pages _are_ quicker now. What did you do? They were dog slow since the last change. I checked my own speed, and I know that the latency was not at my end. It could be upstream from me, but I did not notice dog slow pages elsewhere. A good guess would be that it was caused by something that you did at your end. It’s OK now.
(2) You can buy your own cable box as long as it’s compatible with what your cable company uses, and that’s not hard to figure out. The silver lining there is that you can choose one with a faster processor, and it does make an immediate eye-popping difference.
(3) As for what might have got into your pool, it could be anything borne by the wind. We know that there are wild, wind blown, yeasts in Belgium that produce amazingly good lambics.
(4) Instead of using pool chemicals that leave your skin dry, cracked, and itchy, investigate pool sanitation that uses ultraviolet light.
(5) Cheer up. A really long run of bad luck has a very low probability. Things will get better later because it’s a matter of probability.
ItchySwimmer: (1) It may be just coincidence. Or the new equipment could be making things faster since it doesn’t seem to have as many faults. (2) Our provider must “authorize” every box in order to receive programming. That’s what was wrong with the original unit. It mysteriously became unauthorized and they couldn’t reset it remotely. (3) Stuff blows in from the new home construction around here From time to time; but there’s not much going on up now. So, we still haven’t identified the source. (4) When the chemistry is properly balanced, we don’t have much chlorine in the water since it’s just us. We keep the levels much lower than what you would find in a community pool. (5) I know you are right; but the run of bad luck recently has been really depressing.
