A Painless Upgrade?
I upgraded WordPress, the software that runs our blog, to the latest version on Friday. The upgrade process went smoothly; but I did notice a few quirks in the administration areas. I considered waiting; but, I was getting tired of looking at misaligned screens due to the previous version’s incompatibility with Internet Explorer 8. (The post and pages that visitors see were fine since our theme is IE8 compatible.) I’ve already submitted a couple of patches, and, judging by the activity in their bug tracking system, so have a lot of other people. Anyway, if you see anything strange on the front end, please leave a comment or send an email.
Since I was already doing software maintenance, I decided to install Vista Service Pack 2 on the desktops at home. A lot of people have had problems with Vista; but it has worked very well for us. Other than having to confirm the installation in several places, which was a nuisance since the upgrade takes so long, everything went OK. Speed wise, it seems about the same; but it seems like it uses less memory. (I don’t care about boot time since I never turn my computer off.)
I’m going to blog for a bit and then California Girl and I are going to see “Terminator Salvation”. Everyone have a great Saturday afternoon!
Update: I spoke too soon. I can’t get SP2 installed on our laptop. And, the movie got interrupted part way though. We got free tickets to another movie which was good; but we missed some of the action. (I still don’t know what year it was.)

oh- i am the only one running vista at my office and i love it! My boss hates vista and refuses to move to it as the preferred OS at work. That sucks about the movie- hope you saw something that made up for it!
Viemoira: I built the desktop systems we use in Christmas 2007 and we haven’t had any problems with Vista. I think most of the issues are with older hardware. We saved the complimentary tickets for later. We’ll probably use them to watch “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen”. What’s nice is that we can use them for any showing even though we were at the matinee.
I thought you were going to post a pic of CG when you wrote a post about “geeky” subjects.
Chuck: That was an oversight on my part. So today’s DIY post has two pictures.
How long did the wordpress upgrade take? The admin of pretentious critics hasn’t upgraded because he’s afraid to because everything works fine and he doesn’t want to mess with it.
Kate: The upgrade was smooth and painless. He really should upgrade. There are a lot of nice new features in the later version of WordPress, especially in the admin area. Widgets and plugin management are much better and so is pos creation, especially if you upload pictures or other multimedia. Software is no different than a car. The old one may still work OK; but new ones are always nicer. And, unlike automobiles, WordPress is free.
Not sure if this has anything to do with WP or not, but everytime I submit a comment on your site I get asked (by your site) to submit my username and password (I obviously don’t do that and click cancel) and then it takes my comment.
Just thought that you would like to know.
Rage: What you are seeing is due to Married In Ohio being OpenID enabled. That was another upgrade I did sometime last month. Since you use your wordpress.com url which is also opened enabled our site automatically asked wordpress.com to authenticate you. The dialog box is actually presented by tiwiwtw.wordpress.com. If you do complete the form, tiwiwtw.wordpress.com just tells mariedinohio.com that you are who you say you are. The concept behind OpenID is that you login once and then are securely and transparently authenticated on other sites. It’s no big deal. It just saves you from having to type your email and nickname since those are automatically provided.
