Just Say No
I started on a diet this weekend and its killing me. It’s hard to OD on basketball (the first round of NBA playoffs) when you can’t have any munchies. I don’t usually diet; I prefer to increase the duration and intensity my workouts instead. But I noticed that I was snacking a lot. So, I’ve given up candy, cookies, potato chips, etc. for the foreseeable future. It wasn’t that I was gaining weight so much as I was developing unhealthy habits that had to stop. I wouldn’t mind losing a few pounds; but mostly I need to get re-accustomed to avoiding useless calories. I still have whatever I want for dinner; but I don’t eat anything between meals when I’m watching TV or sitting at the computer. So, it isn’t a “diet” so much as it is an adjustment of my eating habits. Like several years ago; when I stopped drinking pop every day and gave up fast food lunches. At some point, I will start eating candy and salty snacks again. But it will be at a greatly reduced level.

Good for you. Lots of TV oppertunities with the NCAA, NBA, NHL, and NASCAR. I don’t get into MLB untill September.
Cold and wet here AGAIN!!!!
Changing habits like that is the only real way to keep the weight off. When I had to retire from judo I put on a lot of weight because I didn’t change my eating habits to match my energy output. Now I’m paying for it.

I gained 40lbs from gal bladder removal and getting too comfy when Beast and I first got together. Now I’m realizing I’m paying big time cause I cannot eat like a Beast lol…
I’m on week 2 of a diet, nothing too bad but counting calories. It sucks. I’ve got a terrible metabolism and tae kwon do 3 times a week, aerobics/dance 2 times a week and cycling simply counters my 8 hour per day desk job…
Watching what and how much I eat has lost me 6 lbs while quitting smoking! So cheers to you I feel the pain but results are worthwhile!
Carolina Jim and Wife: I haven’t been cheating but it’s hard, especially when I’m watching TV. I never realized how much I snacked until I stopped. The only good thing is that it’s been effective so I’m seeing a lot more progress than I thought I would. Its cold and rainy again here too.
Yondan: I’ve always had snacks from time to time. But the quantity and frequency crept up over time until I was eating much too much. I can image your situation. I see how hard my instructor at boxing works. Teaching a group class is quite a workout, especially if there is a lot work with the mitts. That’s a lot of energy that you’re not expending any more.
Viemoira: I know exactly how that goes. Eight years ago, I used to weigh 260 until I decided that I had to eat better and work out! I box 2 days a week and run 4 – 5 times a week and I was still losing the battle. (A desk job for me as well.) The only “good” thing was that I was snacking a LOT so when I stopped, I saw immediate results. Now that I know how much of an effect the snacking had I’m going to pick my snacks a lot more carefully.
