Six Years Running

Longtime readers will recall that California Girl and I have a tradition of running in the Cincinnati Flying Pig Half-Marathon which is always the first Sunday in May (today). This year was our sixth. We didn’t have the opportunity to train as much as we would like because of the long cold winter; but we still did OK. We did not like the course as much as in years past (too much concrete) but it was still a fun run. We both still find it amazing that we have a tradition of running 13.1 miles. California Girl’s hips are a bit sore; so she’ll probably take a couple of days off. I’ll do my normal workout on Monday albeit a little slower than normal.

We’re not “fitness nuts”; but we really feel a sense of accomplishment for participating. It would be all o easy to stay home, lie around, and watch TV. The course is very hilly, so it would be a good workout, even if it was shorter. We’d like to run a full marathon together some day; but Ohio is not the ideal location. Summer days can be hot so races are usually in the early spring or late fall which greatly increases the chance of rainy and/or cold weather. It was a bit cold at post time today; but not nearly as cold as it has been in some of the past races.

I think that it is good that California Girl likes to run with me. It would be much harder if I had to do everything by myself. I need the workouts a much more than she does. I think her genes are way better than mine. We’re going to call out for a pizza and celebrate our triumph. As the saying goes, it was good day.

Congratulations on so many years of running. I had signed up for a walk in March, but then we had the big snow and so I just skipped it.

  2. Alfie Says:

Congrats! Wow, am I impressed. Always admired the stamina of you guys.

  3. Richard Says:

Congratulations. I wish that I had the energy that both of you have.

  4. David Says:

Awesome, guys! Congratulations on yet another (half) marathon! That totally kicks butt. Very proud to know you–if only through the internets. Yay! Remember: it’s no small accomplishment. 99% will never even try it…so to have done six of them is great.

  6. Michelle Says:

Way to go guys, that is fantastic! If I didn’t have a workout partner, I’d never go to the gym. It makes it so much mor enjoyable! (down 90 pounds btw)

  7. Sexy Duet Says:

Congrats, great effort! Makes the 4km we will be doing this weekend sound like a walk around the park, which it kinda is lol but at least we will be supporting a good cause.

Rosie: The cold winter set us back too. We didn’t train as much and were about 5 minutes slower than last year and 15 minutes slower than our best time. Still, it always feels good to finish.

Elfie: Marathons and half marathons are “easy”. You don’t have to run fast. You just have to keep going. It’s more determination than speed.

Richard: Thanks. We think the thoroughbreds than finish these things in just over an hour are amazing. You see them running back the other way when you’re not even half-way through the course.

David: Glad to know you (via the internet) as well. That’s one of the things that we love about blogging. Since races are so “crowded” we didn’t really think about how most people are at home in bed until you mentioned it. It is an accomplishment to be proud of; especially since, even though we run/work out, we aren’t really “runners”.

Bill McCool: Everyone has to get started somewhere. Although this is our sixth race, there is no way we could have done it eight years ago. Age caught up to us and we decided we need to do something to turn back the clock.

Michelle: It is easier if you have someone to do things with. I know I’ve been working a lot these past few weeks and have been running by myself very late in the evenings and it’s been hard to stay motivated. Congratulations on losing 90 pounds!

Ms SD: We also run for good causes too. But we don’t usually travel for those. For us, the important thing is that we do something rather than lay around any buy bigger and bigger clothes every year.
