Learner’s Permit
It’s hard for us to believe; but one day soon, I’m going to take The Girl to the bureau of motor vehicles to get her temporary learner’s permit. Someday in the not too distant future she’ll be driving. And, not to long after that, she’ll be getting ready to go off to college. I know that it’s still two years away; but The Boy’s sophomore year doesn’t seem like that long ago. I think that she’ll be a good driver. It’s just when your youngest is about to start driving they don’t seem like kids anymore. I know it will make things more convenient. And cut down on some of the late nights that I have been having. But it’s forcing us to face the fact that our kids aren’t really kids.

Actually you’ll probably stay up late wondering where she is and why she’s not answering her cell. Of course back in our day we didn’t even have pagers, so my parents really did worry, but probably not too much since I was a boy. You tend to worry about the daughters more.
Yeah, I understand completely…
My 18-year-old son had his first accident last week, and luckily was not seriously hurt, although looking at what’s left of the truck was hard to do…
Get ready for what little hair you have left to get grey really fast… I finally started shaving mine all off
D.B.: We have two rules for our kids. One, They MUST answer their cell phone 100% of the time when we call or their phone privileges are automatically suspended no matter what reason/excuse they provide. And two, they must take their phone with them whenever they leave the house. If for some reason they don’t have it (like I took it away for not picking up) then they can’t go anywhere. Those two rules in combination have done a god job at ensuring that they always answer. So, I’ll probably be able to contact her; but I’ll still worry.
DisappearingJohn: We are so not ready for this. The boy doesn’t do much comparatively; but The Gil has plans whenever she doesn’t have a game. (Or afterwards if the game is not too late.) The only “good” think is that we got a new vehicle last year so it won’t be as catastrophic if they wreck the old sedan we used to drive. The closest they get to driving the new vehicle is backing it out of the garage. And, mercifully, I keep my hair cut so short that even if I went completely gray it would be hard to tell.
Ohhhh, you’ll still have late nights. You’ll be awake… and waiting.
Rosie: I’ve never been able to go to sleep when the kids are out of the house even when they weren’t driving. The only good thing is that she’ll have an earlier curfew when she drives herself. I know it’s a natural progression; but I expect I probably won’t even need to cut my hair a year from now since I’ll have pulled out what little there is.
I understand completely about your kids getting older. I will have a teenager in April!!!! Where did the little bundle I brought home from the hospital go and who is this young adult that gives me attitude? At least I still have another 4 years until she can drive lol.
Ms SD
Children don’t stay “children” to long. Or it seems so.
I hear you. When BigBrother(13) talks now, he sounds like the Jolly Green Giant. He’s counting the days til he can get his learner’s permit already.
Ms SD: We’ve got two teenagers! I put the exclamation point because sometimes it feels like that. In Ohio, you can get your learner’s permit when you are 15 ½ even though you can’t test for your license until you are 16. We’ve been through this stage with The Boy; but its different now since The Girl is our youngest.
Richard: Kids sure do grow up fast. I was going through my email earlier today and came across a photograph taken five years ago that seems like just yesterday. In some ways, I wish I could go back to that time
Chickie: Enjoy these days. He’ll be 18 and off to college before you know it. I try not to think about it but The Boy has got less than six more months at home.
