The kids, especially The Boy, have been very busy with their sports and other activities this spring. So busy, in fact that when they do have free time, all they want to do is stay home and unwind. As a result, it has been a long time since they were both away at the same time and California Girl and I have had the house all to ourselves. We really needed some time away by ourselves since we have not been home alone recently. We finally had some time this weekend. Sort of. We spent Saturday night at a nice hotel in downtown Cincinnati. The only problem was that we had to get up and run a road race on Sunday.
California Girl and I have what is becoming a long standing tradition of running in the Cincinnati Flying Pig Half-Marathon. Some years, the weather has been miserable but this year the weather was just about perfect. In fact, the whole weekend was perfect. For once, the girl was not playing soccer on Saturday so we arrived in plenty of time to check in to our hotel and go over to the expo to pick up our packets. It was warm so we went everywhere on foot. There was an hour and a half wait at the restaurant that we wanted to eat at so we went back to the room and had some fabulous sex. The balcony to our room overlooked the atrium so it’s a good thing that there was a band playing in the restaurant. Afterwards, we lounged around the room for a bit and went to eat dinner.
On Sunday, we got up, ran a half-marathon, went back to the room, showered up, and had more fantastic sex. It was time to get up and check-out almost before we knew it. I don’t want to minimize the race. 13.1 miles is a long way. But the weekend is as much about going away and doing something together as it is about running. We can run in a race anytime. But getting away from it all is much more elusive. We were away less than 24 hours (including the time that we were running) but it was still very rejuvenating. With the kids as busy as they are, the logistics of getting away for a weekend are almost impossible. We’ve been able to do it every year as “planned” but we never know until the last minute if we’re going to be able to make things work or not.
It’s things like this that renew us as a couple. Time away coupled with competition and liberal doses of sex is the perfect counterbalance to the hectic pace of our springtime lifestyle. Walking around Fountain Square on a warm spring night. Eating a quiet dinner while we talk about “adult things”. Crossing the finish line side by side after a good run. It’s no wonder that we put the queen size bed in our hotel room to good use. Our only regret is that we can’t have more weekends like this. But the uncommonness is probably what makes it so special.
P.S. For those long time readers who remember what happened last year: Yes, I remember my running shorts.

Sounds like a fantastic weekend, and we are both so happy for you. Emm and I are a bit long in the tooth for the running bit – but can empathise with the rest. Beautiful post. Thanks for sharing, as always.
If envy is a sin, then I am guilty of sinning. You lucky devils! It is good of you to share details of your private time together. Thanks and here’s to more weekends like that.
Wow, I guess I’ve been reading for a year now, because I remember the shorts incident
Glad you had such an athletic weekend in more ways than one!
Alfie: We hope to still be running when were retired. Besides all of the health benefits, it gives us energy for other things.
Lapis Ruber: We know that there won’t be enough of them but, in a way, it’s probably for the best. We don’t look forward to the day when the kids are gone and our house is quiet. Days will be less hectic; but we love having children around.
Michelle: I packed multiple pairs just to be sure. I was MUCH more comfortable. In fact, I went running like I usually do on Monday. We’re glad that we’ve been able to keep year interest for a year. Thanks for reading.
