Where Have All The Blogs Gone

Monday, January 30th, 2006 | General | By: Midwestern City Boy

First Fred and Wilma’s fun was taken down last week. Then Young Suburban Wife went off line on Saturday and One To The Nth Power signed off on Sunday. So three daily reads are no more. As Married In Ohio approaches its one year anniversary, we are becoming the elder statesmen. In case you were wondering, California Girl and I have no plans to stop blogging. We don’t know what the future holds. But this blog will be somewhere in the mix.

I would think a blog is hard work. AND so many have been hacked these last two weeks. That rather took the fun out of things. Though now with a void in the Universe maybe I…. But no, my friends, I’ll just continue to visit. Love that you both are elder statemen/woman.

Some have voluntarily gone offline; others are under attack. We’re not sure if it’s because of phishing but others feel it is a Blogger security loophole.

I’ve been writing about it a bit, reminding people to set up their ‘blog-send’ feature on Blogger and backing up their blogs.

I’ve noticed that too..and it tends to go in streaks? The scary part is as Rosie mentioned above - the ones that have been “found”.

I wouldn’t like to be exposed that way….I feel sorry for those who are.

Actually Fred & Wilma’s Fun went back up today (Monday). It has a new look. The first post there notifies us that it’s under new management. I think they should have also changed names… but we’ll see how everything turns out. In the meantime, it’s good to know that Married in Ohio will still be around.

I’m so glad you guys are going to stick around. I had just found you. Wouldn’t want to lose you so quickly.

One of my favorite blogs went down recently too. It’s weird though we don’t really ‘know’ each other it’s like losing a friend.

Rosie: Our blog is off of the beaten track (not on Blogger) so it is not as likely to be noticed by hackers. Plus, since we have our own domain, there is not as much bang for the buck since it would have to be hacked individually. And since I administer it myself, I have more anti-hacking provisions than would be practicable with a service like Blogger.

I hate that the hackers have caused some people to stop blogging. I don’t think that Blogland is going to run out of blogs; but it’s getting harder for me to find ones I like. I’m glad that you keep coming visiting. Of our regular visitors, you have been commenting for the longest time, so you are an elder stateswoman as well.

Viviane: I think its phishing. It wouldn’t be that hard to create a blog on Blogger which uses javascript to steal passwords when people sign in to comment. And if you’re being attacked, its way no fun. And if it’s not any fun, why do it?

We back up our blog daily. Up until recently when I re-configured the backup, if you visited at the wrong time the blog wouldn’t come up. I’d lie to think that were relatively safe, but I know the only reason we haven’t been attacked is because there are other, more lucrative targets.

Kelly: I hope we don’t get “found” it wouldn’t stop us but it would definitely cause friction. (Assuming we ere discovered by relatives). There are already things that are on the do not discuss list and this blog would find its way on to that list as well but not before many lectures. I imagine it would be eye-opening for either of our parents.

P: Thanks for the tip. I’ll go check them out. I think they should have changed names too; but that wound make the blog harder to find. I’m cautiously optimistic tat its going to resemble Fred & Wilma’s Fun from the early days. Other than an occasional outage because the administrator (me) made an oops, we will be on line with regular posts.

Lori: I’m glad that you like us. I would like to think that our blog is under the radar as blogs go and not attracting too much attention. We plan to continue blogging. This blog has become a part of us like many things we do in real life. We’re very appreciative of our visitors, especially the ones who leave a comment. We blog for ourselves but it is interesting to know what others think.

Kalani: I prefer it if the authors can leave a farewell post but I know that is not always possible sometimes. Blogging is a great outlet but there are more important things in life. Usually after a blog has been gone for a while, (and whatever precipitated it being take offline has died down) I’ll e-mail send the authors and ask if everything is OK. But I don’t have an e-mail address for some bloggers so I can’t contact them.
