Dead Computer
My “server” dropped dead yesterday (Friday). It’s not truly a server since it’s an all-in-one system, but it still handles all our e-mails and serves up our family web site plus a couple of special purpose web-sites that my wife runs. I knew that it would happen eventually. Of course, with my luck, it was 11:00 P.M. on a Friday night when I had nothing planned on Saturday. It wouldn’t restart after a driver update. No fan-noise, no hard rives spinning, no nothing. I am presuming that the power supply failed, but I don’t plan any further investigation. After some quick research on the web, I determined that it would cost more money than its worth to fix since the PSU is integrated into the case and I would need to replace both. Plus, I wouldn’t have any e-mail until I could get the replacement parts via next day air on Tuesday, or perhaps even Wednesday with the Presidents Day Holiday. So I spent half the night and all day today installing and configuring a new system. The web-sites and e-mail were only down for about 3 hours but it took considerably longer than that to get everything set up the same way it was on the dead system. Fortunately, I had an un-used system in the basement. (Don’t all techies have spare equipment lying around?) I’m finished with the slick-looking but non-repairable systems. Give me a plain but easy to upgrade/fix beige box! I just fixed (hopefully) the last configuration issue. With any luck, I can have a nice relaxing Sunday.
Later …
